프랑스 철학자 쥘 드 고티에는 플로베르의 작품을 심리학적으로 분석하며, '보바리즘'(Bovarism)이란 용어를 창시한다. "보바리즘은 스스로를 있는 그대로의 자신과 다르게 상상하는 기능을 말한다. 이것은 환상을 자아내는 병이며, 이 환상은 불만을 유발한다. 이런 성격을 가진 인물은 이상의 안경을 쓰고 현실을 바라봄으로써 현실을 변형시킨다."
